Election Integrity Commitee: Orientation for Election Workers
Date:
Wed., July 30, 2008
Description:
The EIC is recruiting election workers for the 2008 primary and general elections.  Observers will be needed in place for the early ballot processing boards as early as August 22!  Experience with the heavy turnout in the Presidential Preference Election demonstrated the critical need to staff an army of volunteers and alternates.  We need to prepare our observers to know in advance what could go wrong in an election. Take this message to your friends, neighbors, communities and clubs. It’s time to step up to serve in a pivotal election that could be the most important of our lifetimes. These sessions focus on:

  • How to spot what could go wrong at precincts
  • Breaches of chain of custody of ballots at any stage of the election process
  • How to protect voters' rights to make sure eligible voters have correct ID
  • Rules for provisional and conditional provisional ballots
  • How, when and who to call when you notice deviations from procedure, have questions or unresolved problems

Volunteers for specific observer positions (Receiving Board, Early Ballot Processing Board, Duplicating Board etc.) will be required to attend a task-specific training in order to receive a credential from the Democratic Party Chair.  Note: These sessions are different from the training offered by the Elections Department for paid workers. If you, or someone you know, wish to be appointed for a paid election job for the General Election, please sign up with the EIC between now and August 1.
