Common Questions About Voting in Pima County

Can I vote in the party primary as an independent?

Arizona is an "open primary" state meaning those registered with no party preference / Independents may vote for candidates within the Primary Election. But you must choose a party when requesting your ballot. If you are on the Active Early Voting List, you should receive a notification by mail asking you to choose which party ballot you wish to receive about 90 days ahead of the election. Note this does not apply to Presidential Elections. Voters must be registered with the recognized party to vote.

Can I register if I am not yet 18 years old?

You can register before you turn 18 only if you will be 18 by the next election. Note that you can only sign petitions once you turn 18.

How do I vote if I'm living oversees?

All United States citizens who are active-duty Military and their dependent family members and United States citizens residing overseas have additional accommodations available to them to register and vote in all local, state, and Federal elections. Get more info here.

If I am a student who lives in a dorm, can I vote in Arizona?

Yes! You can vote in Arizona if you live in dorms or are not sure where you will live after graduation. You can also register with an out-of-state driver's license.

Do I need to provide proof of citizenship?

In the state of Arizona, you must provide proof of citizenship to vote state and local elections. Otherwise you will be a "Federal-only" voter and will receive a limited ballot with only the President, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives races.

To remove “Federal-only” status and receive a ballot that includes state and local races and ballot measures, you must provide proof of citizenship to the County Recorder. You may contact them at (520) 724-4330.

Restore your voting rights!

Under Arizona law, a person convicted of a felony may have their right to vote restored. Free legal advice is available from the County Public Defender.
